Malaysia EV registrations surged 177% in October 2025, over 10,000 BYDs registered so far this year

EV registrations in Malaysia have hit a new monthly record high according to the latest Road Transportation Department (JPJ) data for October 2025.

For the month of October 2025, there are 4,345 EVs registered which is a 177% jump year-on-year (YoY) compared to just 1,569 units registered in October 2024.

From January to October 2025, a total of 31,273 EVs were registered in Malaysia, surpassing the entire 2024 total of 21,789 units. With two months remaining, EV registrations in 2025 are expected to exceed 35,000 units.

EVs show the highest growth segment in Malaysia’s auto industry

Malaysia’s vehicle industry saw a slight increase last month with a total of 81,413 vehicles registered across all fuel types. Among the categories, EVs continue to show the highest growth at 177%, followed by Hybrids at 55%.

EVs currently account for 5.34% of total industry volume while petrol hybrids account for 3.44%.

Top 30 EVs in Malaysia for October 2025

For the month of October, the Proton e.MAS 7 remains the #1 EV with 742 units registered. BYD dominates the next four spots with the Atto 3 at #2 with 464 units, Sealion 7 at #3 with 433 units, Seal 6 at #4 with 386 units and Atto 2 at #5 with 325 units.

Interestingly, the Zeekr 7X has jumped to #6 with a total of 323 units registered last month while the recently launched iCaur 03 made it to the #7 spot with 310 units.

The list continues with Tesla Model Y at #8 with 246 units, Xpeng G6 at #9 with 120 units and BYD M6 at #10 with 88 units.

Top 30 EVs in Malaysia from January to October 2025

For the year so far, the Proton e.MAS 7 is still the most popular EV model with 6,954 units registered. This is followed by the BYD Sealion 7 at #2 with a total of 3,142 units and the BYD Atto 3 at #3 with 3,129 units.

Tesla takes #4 and #5 spot for the Model Y and Model 3 which recorded 2,680 and 1,486 units respectively.

The next 3 spots are dominated by BYD with the M6 at #6 with 1,349 units, Atto 2 at #7 with 1,076 units and Seal at #8 with 938 units.

Fully electric MPVs have also grown popularity with the Denza D9 at #9 with 932 units and the Zeekr 009 at #10 with 689 units

Top 20 EV Brands in Malaysia from January to October 2025

BYD remains the #1 EV brand in Malaysia. In just 10 months, the Chinese brand has already registered 10,165 units while its premium sub-brand Denza is at #8 with 932 units.

This is followed by Proton at #2 with 6,954 units and Tesla at #3 with 4,167 units.

Following the release of the Zeekr 7X, Zeekr has risen to the #4 spot with a total of 1,362 units, surpassing BMW and XPeng. BMW is at #5 with 1,294 units while its Mini sub-brand is at #11 with 527 units.

XPeng is currently at #6 with 1,142 units, followed by Chery at #7 with 952 units, Denza at #8 with 932 units, Porsche at #9 with 607 units and Mercedes-Benz at #10 with 555 units.

EV registrations is expected rise in the final few months following the launch of the Proton e.MAS 5. In addition, there’s also a massive push by brands to take advantage of the tax holiday on fully imported EVs which is set to end on 31st December 2025.
