Malaysia’s EV registrations nearly doubled YoY in August 2025, now 4.4% of TIV

Electric Vehicles (EV) continue to show strong growth as a total of 3,461 EVs have been registered in August 2025 according to the latest vehicle registration data released by the Road Transportation Department (JPJ). That marks a 95% increase Year-over-Year (YoY) from 1,774 units recorded in August 2024.

EVs made up 4.4% of total industry volume for the month, with overall vehicle registrations rising slightly by 3.82% YoY to 78,978 units.

From January to August 2025, there are 23,396 EVs registered, which marks a 63.37% Year-to-Date (YTD) growth over the same period last year. The total EVs registered in the first 8 months of the year have already exceeded the total number of EVs registered (2024: 21,789 EVs) throughout last year.

If this momentum continues, EV registrations are expected to exceed 35,000 units by the end of 2025.

EVs continue to show the highest YoY growth at 95.10%, followed by Hybrids at 50.83%. Interestingly, Diesel and Green Diesel registrations have grown by 10.80% and 11.06% respectively.

In total numbers, there are more EVs registered compared to hybrids in Malaysia for 2025.
