Tesla has officially arrived in Malaysia bringing along its Model Y electric SUV and its Tesla Supercharger network. Seen as a major disruptor for EVs in Malaysia, here’s everything you need to know about the vehicles on offer as well as the charging network.
Tesla Model Y Price and Spec in Malaysia
Unlike our neighbours in Thailand and Singapore, Tesla Malaysia is only offering the Tesla Model Y in Malaysia. Priced from RM199,000, the Model Y in Malaysia is among the cheapest in the world. Here’s a quick rundown of the Tesla Model Y variants available in Malaysia:
- Rear Wheel Drive – RM199,000
- All-Wheel Drive Long Range – RM246,000
- All-Wheel Drive Performance – RM288,000
Tesla Malaysia confirmed during the launch that the listed prices are inclusive of sales tax. For financing, they are partnering with Maybank, Ambank and Liberty.
The base RWD Model Y boasts 430km of range and a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 6.9 seconds with a top speed of 217km/h. If you need the longest driving range on a single charge, the AWD Model Y Long Range boats 533km of range and a quicker 0-100km/h acceleration time of 5.0 seconds.
For the ultimate performance, the AWD Model Y Performance gets from 0-100km/h in just 3.7 seconds and it has a higher top speed of 250km/h. Of course, with the more powerful output, the range for the Performance is slightly lower at 514km.
Tesla Malaysia has been accepting bookings for the Model Y since last week and the car is expected to be available for delivery in early 2024. You can secure your Tesla Y with a non-refundable RM1,000 payment through the Tesla website.
The default Pearl White colour option is free and if you want to change to other colours it will cost you RM5,000 for Solid Black, Midnight Silver Metallic and Deep Blue. If you want your Tesla to come in Red, that will cost you RM10,000.
Other extra upgradable options include upgrading from 19″ Gemini to 20″ Induction wheels for RM10,000 and you can opt to change the seats from Black to White for RM5,000. The Performance variant gets 21″ wheels as standard. For the upgraded “auto-pilot” tech, the Enhanced Auto Pilot costs RM16,000 while the Full Self-Driving Capability (inclusive of Basic and Enhanced) costs RM32,000.
At the moment, all fully imported EVs in Malaysia enjoy full exemptions for import and excise duties until the end of 2025. Road tax for EVs is also waived until the end of 2025.
Tesla Supercharger Network in Malaysia
The major advantage of Tesla is its EV charging network that’s called the Tesla Supercharger. As revealed during the launch, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur is their first location which has a total of 8 DC fast charging stations. The chargers will be enabled soon pending necessary approvals. So far there’s no pricing details yet but we do know that there will be idling fees that will be charged for owners that don’t move their cars after charging is completed.
These chargers with a maximum output of 250kW are capable of delivering up to 270km of range with a quick 15 minute charge on the cable. If you’re in a rush, the chargers can push 120km of range in just 5 minutes.
Tesla aims to introduce more SuperCharger locations and they have listed 10 upcoming spots located in the Klang Valley, Penang, Perak, Negeri Sembilan and Johor. Besides Pavilion, Tesla announced that they are also partnering with other property developers including Gamuda, Sunway Group and Quill.
