Rate Limit Exceeded? Twitter imposes FUP to read tweets Elon Musk says its a good deed for the world

If you’re a Twitter addict and suddenly you’re greeted with a “Rate Limit Exceeded” error, you’re not alone. Twitter has imposed restrictions on how many tweets a user can read to tackle data scraping by third-party bots.

According to Twitter CEO Elon Musk, the new rate limit has been imposed to address extreme levels of data scraping and system manipulation. At 1am this morning, the reading limit was set for 300 posts per day for new unverified accounts, 600 posts per day for verified accounts and 6000 posts per day for verified accounts.

The limits are said to be temporary and Twitter has increased the allowance gradually. At 2:46am, the limit was raised to 400 posts per day for new unverified accounts, 800 posts per day for unverified and 8000 posts per day for verified. At 5:49am, the daily limit was raised to 500 per day for new unverified accounts, 1,000 for unverified accounts and 10,000 for verified accounts.

Prior to this, Twitter has recently limited access to read tweets only for users who have logged in. This means if you’re not a Twitter user, you won’t be able to view tweets from your web browser. It was reported that Musk has been blaming third-party companies for harvesting data for artificial intelligence training large language models such as ChatGPT, Bing and Google’s Bard.

Poking fun at the rate-limited situation, he said the limit was set because Twitter addicts need to go outside. He remarked that he was doing a good deed for the world.

In case you missed it, Twitter Blue is a paid subscription which costs RM35/month or RM369/year in Malaysia. Besides getting the verified blue tick, users will get access to more features including the ability to edit tweets, post longer and higher resolution videos, see fewer ads and get higher visibility on Twitter replies and search results.
