Last week, the police arrested a 34-year-old man suspected of burning 17 vehicles including motorcycles and four electric scooters. The individual who is identified as food delivery rider Azril Kamarunzaman has been charged in sessions court today for causing mischief.
The rider has been charged under Section 435 of the Penal Code with committing mischief by fire and he pleaded not guilty. He faces a possible maximum jail time of 14 years and a fine. The incident took place in front of Suria KLCC at Jalan Ampang at 3.30pm on 13th April 2023.
Initially, he was allowed bail of RM12,000 but was later reduced to RM5,000 after appealing that he has to take care of his wife and parents. The court has fixed 22nd May for mention.
According to Sinar Harian, the individual was arrested after he was spotted near the location on CCTV before the fire incident took place. To dispel speculation that the fire was EV-related, Beam’s Mobility Malaysia General Manager issued a statement clarifying that the fire incident wasn’t caused by one of the scooters while iterating that their fleet undergoes stringent fire safety tests before being put on the streets.
