With more electric vehicles entering the Malaysian market, Nissan is expected to bring in more EV options such as the Nissan Ariya. In conjunction with Valentine’s Day yesterday, Edaran Tan Chong Motor (ETCM) posted a teaser of their upcoming EV but it isn’t the all-new model that we’ve been waiting for.
As shown above, Nissan’s next EV for Malaysia is the 2023 Nissan Leaf. This is essentially a refresh of their 2nd generation Leaf which was launched in Malaysia back in 2019. The new version looks pretty much the same but it receives minor design tweaks including a new wheel design and colour options.
In the UK and Europe, the latest Nissan Leaf is offered in two options – a motor producing 110kW (148hp) and 320Nm of torque paired with a 40kWh battery and a more powerful motor pushing 160kW (215hp) and 340Nm mated to a larger 60kWh battery. The standard model claims to provide a driving range of up to 270km, while the higher-spec variant can deliver up to 385km on a single charge based on a WLTP cycle.
Hopefully, the incoming version for Malaysia will get the full suite of tech upgrades such as a larger 8″ touch-screen infotainment display with Apple Car Play and Android Auto support, as well as more advanced driver assist features including ProPILOT Assist. Like the current model, the Nissan Leaf 2023 also comes with two charging ports – Type 1 for 6.6kW AC slow charging and CHAdeMO which supports 50kW fast charging.
The current Nissan Leaf that’s sold in Malaysia with a 148hp motor and 40kWh battery is now priced at RM175,800 after tax exemptions. With more affordable options like the BYD Atto 3 and Ora Good Cat, the Leaf is quite a tough sell unless it is priced competitively and upgraded with all the bells and whistles.
We hope ETCM will bring the Ariya, Nissan’s latest and greatest EV to Malaysia very soon. Not only it looks more refreshing, but it is also available with a twin-motor AWD setup that produces up to 290kW (388hp) and 600Nm of torque, and a larger 90kWh battery that offers up to 580km of driving range on a single charge.
