Proton’s 2026 exports already surpass full-year 2025 total

Proton has revealed that its total export volume from January to September 2026 has already surpassed its full-year figure for 2025. Specifically, the national carmaker exported 7,370 units to overseas markets in the first nine months of this year, compared to 6,000 units recorded across all of 2025.

The bulk of this growth was driven by Geely export programmes, according to the national automaker.

“Our ambition is to build Proton’s competitiveness through stronger products, greater manufacturing capabilities, and a wider international presence. Expanding our role in becoming an international production hub allows us to fully utilise the investments already put into Tanjong Malim on a greater scale.

These programmes challenge us to keep raising our standards. They broaden the experience of our staff, strengthen our manufacturing discipline, and create opportunities for Proton’s suppliers to grow with us. From this, our responsibility is then to translate these capabilities into consistent quality customers can experience in every Proton vehicle,”- Ir. Abdul Rashid Musa, Deputy CEO, Proton.

While the official announcement did not disclose specific models or export destinations, Geely-branded models currently assembled at Tanjong Malim for overseas markets that we are aware of include the Coolray (X50), Emgrand (S70), Okavango (X90), and EX2 (e.MAS 5). In addition, the Saga MC3 is expected to join the list soon, as the entry-level sedan will be released under the Geely brand in the Philippines.

Strengths of the Proton Tanjong Malim Manufacturing Hub

Located at the heart of the Automotive High-Tech Valley (AHTV), the Proton Tanjong Malim manufacturing complex boasts an annual production capacity of 250,000 units. This includes a dedicated New Energy Vehicle (NEV) plant, which is currently being upgraded to increase its annual capacity to 42,000 units.

The complex is also the home to the Proton Advanced Powertrain Hub, which produces a wide range of engine variants—including turbocharged and naturally aspirated engines—alongside electrified solutions such as Dedicated Hybrid Transmissions (DHT) and Electric Drive Units (EDU).

Additionally, the facility handles the assembly of dual-clutch transmissions (DCT). For models utilising Punch’s Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), production takes place at a nearby facility that is also located within AHTV.

To streamline operations, Proton recently completed a new logistics hub aimed at strengthening manufacturing processes at the plant. The carmaker has also relocated its R&D and engineering facilities to Tanjong Malim, effectively consolidating its local development and production efforts under a single location.
