EV charger hogging is getting worse in Malaysia? | Let’s Talk About #137

Malaysia’s EV adoption continues to show growth entering the new year with EVs taking 9% of total industry volume for January 2026 registrations.

While the number of charging points has grown significantly, a much more frustrating problem has emerged: EV charger hogging.

It’s no longer just Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles blocking bays. We’ve seen EVs hogging the bays for hours to enjoy “free” VIP parking.

In the latest episode of Let’s Talk About, Amin and Alex discuss if the #NoQueue situation is facing a reality check.

They break down the different “types” of hoggers from the drivers who plug in but don’t actually initiate a charge, to those who insist on staying plugged into a DC charger until they reach 100% SoC, despite the massive drop in charging speed after 80%.

Is it time for Charge Point Operators (CPOs) to implement stricter rules when it comes to charging? Are authorities doing enough to tackle EV charger hogging?

Amin and Alex explore whether CPOs are doing enough with idle fees and whether penalty or fines are sufficient to encourage the right behavior.

They also look at the role of property owners and council enforcement officers in penalising EV charging bay misuse.
