Google enables AirDrop file sharing between Android and iPhone

Google has announced a huge step towards better interoperability between Android and iOS. The company has announced that Quick Share will now work with Apple’s AirDrop, enabling direct photo and file transfers between iPhones and Android devices.

According to Google, this cross-OS sharing capability is being rolled today starting with the Google Pixel 10 series.

Google says sharing moments with family and friends shouldn’t depend on which phone they use. It added that users have been asking for a simpler way to share files between devices and it is now being delivered with this new feature.

Seamless file sharing between Android and iPhone starting with Pixel 10

With cross-OS compatibility, Android users can now Quick Share photos and files to iPhone users, while iPhone users can AirDrop photos and files to Android users.

Google iterated that the feature was built with security at its core to ensure that your data is protected with strong safeguards that were independently tested by security experts. It said the cross platform sharing is one more way they are bringing better compatibility that people are asking for between operating systems, following their work on RCS and unknown tracker updates.

Google Quick Share to iPhone currently works only with “Everyone for 10 minutes” mode

From the looks of it, Google has enabled the feature on their own without Apple’s involvement. Unlike other joint-announcements, Apple didn’t issue any release on the cross-platform file sharing feature.

Google clarified that its feature does not use a workaround and the connection is direct and peer-to-peer. When you send a file, your data is never routed through a server, and there’s no logging or sharing of extra data.

To Quick Share files from Android to iPhone, you’ll need to make sure that the receiving iPhone has AirDrop set to “Everyone for 10 minutes”. When sharing files using the “Everyone for 10 minutes” mode, do ensure that you’re sharing with the right person by confirming the device name on the screen with the actual user.

Google added that the current implementation with “Everyone for 10 minutes” mode is just a first step and they welcome the opportunity to work with Apple to enable “Contacts Only” mode in the future.

When we try to transfer files between the Google Pixel 10 and the iPhone 17, the cross-platform feature doesn’t seem to work yet in Malaysia. It looks like the feature is bring rolling out in phases as it is already available in the US.
