As EV registrations in Malaysia continue to grow, we are seeing more EV chargers being deployed to support the demand from EV drivers. In the past few months, we have seen new DC chargers being deployed almost on a daily basis.
In October alone, there are at least 20 notable new DC charging locations that have been deployed by main Charge Point Operators which include Gentari, JomCharge, ChargEV and TNB Electron.
Here’s the list of notable DC Charging locations that have been switched on between 1st to 31st October 2025
- JomCharge 120kW Setia Avenue Setia Alam (Plugshare)
- JomCharge 50kW TTDI Gold Point (Plugshare)
- Gentari x SEB 120kW Sri Aman Square (Plugshare)
- Gentari 2x 120kW Boulevard Shopping Centre Kuching (Plugshare)
- ChargEV 240kW and 120kW Aeon Mall Rawang (Plugshare)
- ChargEV 240kW Aeon Mall Seri Manjung (Plugshare)
- ChargEV 60kW The Glades Plaza Putra Heights (Plugshare)
- JomCharge 70kW + 20kW Nasi Lemak Burung Hantu Sri Hartamas (Plugshare)
- Gentari 100kW Tasek Commercial Centre KotaSAS (Plugshare)
- Pansar 60kW The Spring Shopping Mall Kuching
- JomCharge 50kW Petaling Street (Plugshare)
- Gentari 2x 50kW Padang Polo Penang
- Tesla 250kW V4 Supercharger Pavilion Damansara Heights (Plugshare)
- TNB Electron 240kW Petron Batu Melintang, Jeli (Plugshare)
- Charge+ 350kW KL Eco City KL (Plugshare)
- JomCharge 50kW Public Bank Taman Desa (Plugshare)
- TNB Electron 2x 200kW Petron Makmur Gambang Jaya (Plugshare)
- TNB Electron 120kW Selera Laman Perdana Putrajaya (Plugshare)
- TNB Electron 240kW The Atmosphere Seri Kembangan (Plugshare)
- TNB Electron 240kW TNB Yard Batu Rimau Kuala Selangor (Plugshare)
It is worth highlighting the new high-powered DC chargers deployed in charging deserts. This includes Gentari x SEB’s DC Charger at Sri Aman, an ideal mid-point for EV drivers to top up between Kuching and Sibu.
Meanwhile, in Peninsular Malaysia, there’s TNB Electron’s 240kW DC Charger at Petron Batu Melintang in Jeli Kelantan. This is a significant deployment as it the first DC Charger along the Gerik-Jeli, providing range confidence for EV owners to drive from Penang to Kota Bharu.
For those travelling along the LPT between Kuala Lumpur and Kuantan, TNB Electron has deployed not one but two 200kW DC Chargers at Petron Makmur Gambang Jaya. Although it requires an exit out from the highway, the location complements the existing Gentari 150kW DC Charger at Petronas KM26 Gambang, and it is definitely a better place to charge than the dreaded 50kW DC Charger at Gambang Westbound R&R.
On top of that, TNB Electron has also turned on the first public DC Charger in Kuala Selangor with the opening of their 240kW DC Charger at TNB Yard Batu Rimau.
Over 5,100 public EV charge points have been deployed in Malaysia so far
According to the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), there are a total of 5,149 public EV charge points nationwide as of 30th September 2025. The figure consists of 1,709 DC charge points and 3,440 AC charge points.
While Malaysia is still far from achieving its 10,000 total EV charge points by 2025, the DC charge point count has already exceeded its initial target of 1,500.
Is 10,000 EV charge points the right target?
While the 10,000 EV charge point target is great, Malaysia’s EV charging infrastructure strategy should prioritise availability, dependability and travel confidence.
As EV drivers ourselves, it’s not the number of chargers being deployed, but how reliable and accessible they are when you need them.
A more practical and driver-focused approach would be to build large scale charging hubs with at minimum of 20 DC nozzles per location, spaced at every 200km across all interstate routes. Eventually as adoption grows, it narrows down to having a charging hub every 150km and then 100km, while at the same time multiplying the number of DC charge points per location to 40 and more in tandem with demand.
Such approach ensures higher probability of available chargers, redundancy and downtime risks, and it is more efficient compared to scattering of single or dual nozzle DC chargers in random R&Rs along the highway.
In its current state, the EV charging infrastructure in Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak has improved tremendously in the past year with DC chargers available every 200-250km along most interstate routes. This month itself, EV drivers in Sarawak can finally be able to drive with more confidence from Kuching all the way to Miri as there’s now DC chargers in Sri Aman, Sibu and Bintulu.
Of course there’s still a lot of room for improvement especially in underserved areas in Terengganu, Kedah, Perlis, Kelantan, Pahang and Sabah.
The good news is that the Charge Point Operators with the support of the government are committed to building more large scale hubs to support the growing demand for DC Charging infrastructure along highways.
ChargEV and PLUS are developing Terra ChargEV charging hubs with the first location at Seremban R&R Southbound which is expected to open in 2027. This is a retail-integrated EV charging hub with a total power capacity of 1.2MW and features 20 DC charge points.
According to Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, 10 more hubs like Terra ChargEV will be built within the next 3 to 5 years.
