Work Ministry: Highways offer Toll-free travel for Deepavali

The Ministry of Works has announced a toll-free period for highway travel in conjunction with the upcoming Deepavali holiday season. Similar to last year, tolled highway users can enjoy toll-free journeys for two days before the Deepavali holiday.

The toll-free period for tolled highways is running from Tuesday, 29th October (12.01am) until Wednesday 30th October (11.59pm). It is only applicable to Class 1 Private Vehicles and for all tolled highways except for toll plazas at the national border such as Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) and Tanjung Kupang, Johor.

According to the official statement released by Works Minister Dato Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, the toll-free campaign is estimated to cost around RM38 million. The government will bear the cost of the campaign and will compensate the participating highway concessionaires.

The statement added that the toll-free campaign was carried out to help reduce the cost of living and to strengthen the culture of unity among multiracial communities in Malaysia.

The Minister hopes all highway users will benefit from the programme and users are urged to plan their journeys accordingly for a smoother ride. This includes following the recommended travel time advisory (TTA) from the respective highway concessionaires, ensuring your vehicles are maintained and in good condition, and having sufficient balance in your eWallet and Touch ‘n Go cards. If you’re using a SmartTAG, you are advised to ensure that it has enough battery.

Last but not least, all highway users are urged to drive safely and to follow all the road rules. He hopes everyone will play their role in ensuring our highways are safe and reducing the accident statistics during the festive season.
