Just over a month after they launched their flagship Galaxy S23 series, Samsung has now followed it up with the debut of their midrange Galaxy A lineup. This time though there’s only two models on offer, the Galaxy A34 and the Galaxy A54, but we can expect it to be popular among those seeking a well-rounded midrange smartphone.
Samsung Galaxy A34 specs
Starting with the cheaper of the two, the Galaxy A34 features a 6.6-inch, FHD+ Super AMOLED display with a teardrop style notch up top. Samsung has given the display a notable upgrade though, with the Galaxy A34 now capable of a 120Hz refresh rate unlike its predecessor, which was limited to a 90Hz refresh rate instead. The display here is also capable of a peak brightness of 1000nits.
Under the hood, the Galaxy A34 packs a MediaTek Dimensity 1080 system-on-chip, a 6nm chip that was launched late last year. This gets mated to up to 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage, and there’s also a microSD card slot for up to 1TB in expandable storage. It runs Android 13 out of the box with a skin of One UI 5.1 over it, with Samsung also guaranteeing at least four Android OS upgrades and five years of security updates. Such comprehensive support remains a rarity for even flagship Android smartphones, let alone midrange offerings like this.
In the camera department meanwhile, there’s a triple camera setup on the back of the Galaxy A34 with a main 48MP, f/1.8 camera that also comes with OIS and video digital image stabilisation (VDIS). That gets flanked by an 8MP, f/2.2 ultrawide camera and a 5MP, f/2.4 macro sensor. As for selfies, you have a 13MP, f/2.2 front facing camera housed in the teardrop notch. Samsung has also given the camera bump a redesign that fits more in line with the design philosophy of the Galaxy S23 series here.
Keeping the lights on meanwhile is a 5,000mAh battery with 25W fast charging that Samsung claims will be good for up to 21 hours of video playback. You also get stereo speakers, an in-display fingerprint sensor, an IP67 dust and water resistance rating along with support for 5G, NFC, Bluetooth 5.3 and WiFi 5 connectivity. Measuring 8.2mm thick and 199g heavy, the Galaxy A34 will be available in four colour options, namely Awesome Lime, Awesome Graphite, Awesome Violet and Awesome Silver.
There’s no local pricing and availability details just yet, but Samsung has indicated that it’ll be available later this month in Southeast Asia. In the UK meanwhile, the Galaxy A34 starts at GBP349 (~RM1,898.56) for base model with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, while the option with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage goes for GBP399 (~RM2,171.91).
Samsung Galaxy A54 specs
As for the more upmarket Galaxy A54 option, Samsung has actually given this device a smaller display. The Galaxy A54 comes with a 6.4-inch, FHD+ Super AMOLED display that’s capable of a 120Hz refresh rate and 1000nits of peak brightness too. It differs from the Galaxy A34 though by having a more modern looking punch hole cutout rather than a teardrop notch up top.
Powering the Galaxy A54 though is Samsung’s in-house Exynos 1380 processor, replacing the Exynos 1280 that was in the Galaxy A33 and Galaxy A53 from last year. It comes with up to 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage too, and will also offer expandable storage of up to 1TB via a microSD card slot. You’re also getting Android 13 with One UI 5.1 skinned over it, and just like the Galaxy A34, Samsung is guaranteeing that the Galaxy A54 will get a minimum of four Android OS upgrades and five years of security updates.
The cameras on the Galaxy A54 are also notably different than the ones on the Galaxy A34. The triple camera setup on the back of the Galaxy A54 comes with a main 50MP, f/1.8 camera with OIS and VDIS, flanked by a 12MP, f/2.2 ultrawide camera and a 5MP, f/2.4 macro sensor. The front camera meanwhile is a 32MP, f/2.2 selfie shooter housed in a punch hole cutout in the display.
Elsewhere, there’s a 5,000mAh battery with 25W fast charging that they rate good for up to 21 hours of video playback. It’s a little heavier than the Galaxy A34 though, with the Galaxy A54 coming in at 202g and measures 8.2mm thick. There’s also stereo speakers, an in-display fingerprint sensor and a IP67 dust and water resistance rating, along with support for WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC and 5G connectivity. The Galaxy A54 will be available in the same four colour options as the Galaxy A34.
Unfortunately, just like the Galaxy A34, there’s no local pricing and availability details just yet, but is slated to arrive on our shores later this month. It will go on sale in the UK though for GBP449 (~RM2,440.42) for the base model with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, while for GBP499 (~RM2,712.18) you get double the storage.
