The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Din has issued a reminder to the public not to upload or share hate speech involving 3R elements (3R – Race, Religion and Royalty). The reminder comes following several incidents that could affect the country’s public order and harmony.
The statement explained that hate speech refers to text or images that accuse or undermine an individual over race, ethnicity, religion, and citizenship. The MCMC will continue with their monitoring to curb the spread of misinformation as well as inappropriate content involving 3R. Individuals who are found sharing fake, inappropriate or threatening content is an offence under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) 1998. Violators can be slapped with fines up to RM50,000, imprisoned for a year, or both.
The regulator added that police action in accordance with the law will be taken to protect the peace and interest of the community. Administrators for online news portals, social media and instant messaging platforms are urged to use their editorial powers to manage user comments. Social media platforms are told to be more responsible and to take down provocative and dangerous content when detected.
