With the opening of MRT Putrajaya Line Phase 2, there’s now a more affordable way to go to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) by rail. If you don’t want to fork out RM55 for a one-way trip from KLIA Express from KL Sentral, you could save about 75% by taking the MRT to Putrajaya Sentral Station and then switching to KLIA Transit.
As shared by KLIA Express, a trip from Persiaran KLCC to KLIA (T1 and T2) would cost RM13.70 one-way and the trip takes about 52 minutes. Meanwhile, a trip from Taman Equine in Sri Kembangan to KLIA (T1 and T2) costs RM12.40 one-way, with an estimated time of 25 minutes.
Do note that Putrajaya Sentral is a connecting station which requires you to tap out from MRT 2 and then tap in at the KLIA Transit Line. The fare for the Putrajaya Sentral to KLIA/KLIA 2 costs RM9.40 and the trip takes about 4 minutes.
Do note that the estimated time shared by KLIA Express is merely an estimated time excluding the wait times for trains which varies depending on the frequency during off-peak and on-peak hours. If you’re starting your trip from the other end of the line such as Kwasa Damansara MRT station, you’ll have to leave much earlier. For most airlines including low-cost carriers at KLIA and KLIA2, the check-in and baggage drop counters close one hour before departure time.
As a comparison, a standard one-way trip on KLIA Express (non-stop) from KL Sentral to KLIA/KLIA2 costs RM55 and takes about 28 minutes. However, if you purchase the ticket online, you can get a 10% discount (RM49.50).
Since Rapid KL is offering free rides on MRT 2 until 31st March 2023, you could hop on any train and exit at Putrajaya Sentral for free and only pay for the RM9.40 fare to continue the journey to your KLIA terminal. To skip the queue and save a bit more money, you can buy your KLIA Transit tickets online (Select From “Putrajaya & Cyberjaya”, to “KLIA or KLIA2”) and save 10% (RM8.50).
With MRT 2 integrated into Putrajaya Sentral Station, it provides an alternative route to KLIA if you don’t want to worry about traffic jams on the road. The MRT and KLIA Transit combo is significantly cheaper but please do buffer more time for a possibly longer train ride on the MRT, frequency changes as well as time to switch between the two rail networks.
There are Park & Ride facilities at MRT 2 stations as listed below:
• MRT Kentonmen
• MRT Kuchai
• MRT Taman Naga Emas
• MRT Sungai Besi
• MRT Serdang Raya Utara
• MRT Serdang Raya Selatan
