It’s the new year 2023! And if you’re thinking of getting a new prepaid or perhaps switching from another telco or downgrading from a postpaid plan, you’ve come to the right place. There are a couple of new unlimited prepaid options which are pretty good and there are some plans that have been recently downgraded.
Beware of hidden FUP with Unlimited Prepaid plans
We are focusing on “Unlimited” this time because this is probably the most popular type of plan that people are searching for. Most of you would probably type Unlimited on the search bar and telcos would also advertise these plans as unlimited.
We would need to highlight that most of these plans aren’t really “Unlimited” because there’s something called the Fair Usage Policy or better known as FUP for short. So essentially, there’s an invisible ceiling which actually limits how much you can do at full speeds with these “unlimited” plans. Of course, to help you make the right decision, we will mention the FUP that’s hidden in the T&C or FAQ.
U Mobile Prepaid U40 – RM40/month
The first on our list is U Mobile U40 and it’s better than the previous U35 that appeared in our previous prepaid update. The new plan costs RM5 more than U35 but you get “unlimited” hotspot, not just 3GB on the previous plan.
So for RM40/month, U40 provides Unlimited 4G data with a speed cap of 6Mbps, unlimited calls to all networks and unlimited hotspot. U Mobile is also offering uncapped 4G and 5G speeds during the weekends which have to be activated from the app.
The downside is the FUP which is limited to 100GB a month, and it’s applicable to both mobile and hotspot usage. After that, your speed will be throttled down to 512kbps. 100GB for RM40/month, with no hotspot restriction. That’s still quite alright, I think.
Celcom (Xpax) Unlimited 38 – RM38/month
Next we have Xpax Unlimited 38, which remains unchanged but it is probably something you want to consider if you prefer a telco with a wider 4G coverage. It costs RM38/month and you get “unlimited” 4G data capped at 3Mbps, unlimited calls to all networks and it has 3GB of hotspot data. To sweeten the deal, it has an additional 5GB of high-speed data which you can redeem from the app.
Take note that the FUP for this plan is 60GB a month.
Tune Talk Pek Jimat Unlimited – RM38/month
Next is Tune Talk with its Fokus 33. This is quite an interesting “unlimited” plan because it costs RM38/month on a monthly basis or RM33/month if you commit for a full year for extra savings. Even the speed is interesting as well offering 3Mbps but you get double the speed of 6Mbps between 9am to 5pm. The plan also provides unlimited calls to all networks and 4GB of hotspot data.
The plan has a FUP of 50GB a month. Previously, we mentioned that the plan has another FUP with a daily limit of 5GB. But since then, the daily FUP has been removed so you can enjoy 50GB data with fewer restrictions.
Digi Prepaid Next Unlimited – RM40/month
Digi is also offering its Next Unlimited 40 Prepaid which costs RM40/month. You get “unlimited” data capped at 6Mbps, unlimited calls to all networks and 10GB of hotspot data.
And yes it still has an FUP but Digi has confirmed that it is set at 300GB. That’s 3x more than U Mobile.
Yoodo Unlimited – RM35/month
Over at Yoodo, an MVNO that uses Celcom’s network, it claims to offer the Truly Unlimited Unlimited Plan. The base RM35/month option offers unlimited data at 3Mbps, 100 minutes of voice calls and 6GB of hotspot data. If you want more speed, there’s the 6Mbps option at RM43/month and it also comes with 100 minutes of calls and 6GB of hotspot data.
So far there’s no mention of any hard data caps or FUP. Even when people ask Yoodo, they responded, “aiya forget to add FUP la…”
If you’re using Yoodo, do let me know if there’s any FUP for on-device usage.
Maxis (Hotlink) Unlimited Prepaid – RM40/month
Maxis isn’t really known for value for money. And we even called them out for the ridiculous hidden FUP when they introduced the unlimited prepaid plans.
But lately, they have made some significant improvements and their current “best seller” is the Hotlink Unlimited RM40 which offers unlimited data at 3Mbps and unlimited calls. This plan also offers “unlimited” hotspot and uncapped high-speed data daily from 2am to 2pm.
However, the FUP remains unchanged at 50GB for the monthly plan and once you’ve hit the limit, you can still use it but at a slower 512kbps speed.
Unifi Mobile Prepaid – RM35/month
Telekom Malaysia has the second telco to offer 5G in Malaysia and they are offering unlimited 5G on its Unifi Mobile Bebas Prepaid. However, in the past two months, they have been tightening their data restrictions.
For the RM35/month plan, you get unlimited calls, unlimited data for 4G and 5G, but the 4G speeds are now capped at 5Mbps. Meanwhile, the hotspot quota which used to be unlimited is now just 5GB.
That’s not all, there’s now a lower monthly FUP of just 60GB which is applicable to both 4G and 5G usage. Overall, a huge downgrade.
Yes FT5G Prepaid – RM30/month
Yes’s prepaid option the FT5G plan remains one of our favourite unlimited plans if you want to experience 5G.
For RM30/month, the plan offers unlimited calls and unlimited 5G on your phone with no speed or data quota for now. However, if you’re on 4G, it is unlimited but with a speed cap of 7Mbps. Previously, the plan comes with a 9GB hotspot quota for 4G only and you could still hotspot on 5G without limits. However, they have put a stop to that, and the plan now gets a bigger 12GB hotspot quota which covers both 4G and 5G. If you need more hotspot quota, you can add 10GB for RM10.
It is still the best unlimited 5G plan for your phone, but not so much for hotspot. And here’s a tip, if you enable autopay with your credit or debit card, the plan only costs RM25. No brainer. Just take note that 4G coverage on Yes is still quite limited, especially for in-building coverage.
Which Unlimited Prepaid to Recommend?
Ok, this is quite a tough one and it depends on coverage and if you really need to use hotspot data. For unlimited 4G usage, I would say either Digi Prepaid Next Unlimited for RM40 or U Mobile U40. Both have generous FUP of at least 100GB and have a higher capped speed of 6Mbps.
Alternatively, there’s Hotlink Unlimited RM40 which has a slower 3Mbps speed cap but you get unlimited hotspot quota within the 50GB FUP. On top of that, Hotlink also provides uncapped speed between 2am to 2pm daily, which is a good perk.
For 5G, it’s definitely Yes FT5G. You have uncapped speeds on device usage and you get 12GB of hotspot for RM30.
