Celcom now offers “unlimited” 5G wireless broadband for RM149/month with no speed cap

After enabling 5G on selected postpaid and prepaid plans, Celcom has started offering 5G wireless broadband which provides high-speed internet for users without access to fibre broadband. Named Celcom Home Wireless 5G, the service promises ultrafast and unlimited 5G for your home which you can setup easily via plug and play.

The Celcom Home Wireless 5G plan is priced at RM149 and it is tied to a 24-month contract. Celcom is bundling a ZTE MC801A 5G router which supports dual-band WiFi 6 and it is yours to keep only after the contract period is over. According to the FAQ, the 5G wireless modem is locked to your registered address, so you can’t use it at other locations when you travel.

If you sign up for the plan, Celcom requires an upfront payment of RM480. This amount will be rebated back to your account at RM20/month across 24 months. For foreigners, an additional RM500 deposit is required.

Despite being advertised as unlimited, the plan comes with a hard data quota cap of 1TB per month. The T&C states “Unlimited internet quota is subject to Fair Usage Policy (FUP). Unlimited internet quota is capped at 1TB. Upon full utilization of the Internet quota, you shall receive a notification reminder from Celcom via registered email. Notwithstanding this, you may continue using the Internet but the data speed will be throttled and is capped to speed limit of up to 512kbps.” If you need more quota, Celcom offers 50GB (valid for 1 day) for RM10 or a monthly add-on quota of 20GB for RM40 and 40GB for RM70.

As a comparison, Yes 5G’s Wireless 5G home fibre plan costs RM148/month and it offers unlimited 5G data but with a speed cap of 120Mbps. However, if the connection switches to 4G, the plan comes with a limited quota of 150GB per month.

Celcom has not mentioned any speed cap and the FAQ states that the plan’s actual speed will be based on best effort. It states that the average and typical speed can be affected by various factors such as distance from a serving 5G mobile tower, number of users online and how far are you from the wireless 5G router. Digital Nasional Berhad’s 5G network promises to offer a minimum of 100Mbps at the cell edge of its 5G coverage.

If you’re interested in Celcom’s 5G home broadband offering, you can only sign up at selected Bluecobe stores in the Klang Valley. This includes Sunway Pyramid, Prima Sri Gombak, Alamanda, The Gardens, Nu Sentral and Taman Tun Dr Ismail.
