EV owners! You can now sip a Starbucks pumpkin spice latte while you wait for your car to charge for free

Starbucks Malaysia and ChargEV announced on their Instagram accounts that ChargEV charging stations will be available for Starbucks customers to use at 17 selected Starbucks nationwide. ChargEV also mentioned that using the stations would be free of charge.

“We are proud to announce that ChargEV will be available at selected Starbucks Drive-Thrus across Malaysia,” wrote Starbucks.

According to their Instagram Stories posts, the first location seems to be the Starbucks Drive Thru at Eco Grandeur. The branch is in the Bandar Puncak Alam area in Selangor.

While both Starbucks and ChargEV announced they more Starbucks Drive-Thru locations will have charging stations for EVs, they haven’t yet specified which Drive-Thrus in Malaysia will have them. They only mentioned that we should stay updated on their social media pages.

If you’re an EV owner, you might find this news appealing as you can take advantage of the time you have to wait charging an EV by sipping a cup of coffee from Starbucks. This is because it apparently takes at least 30 minutes to an hour to charge an EV.

While we’re at it, my colleague Rory pointed out that he mentioned this idea in an old episode of Let’s Talk About (our podcast! Check it out!). He even said that Starbucks could have this idea for free, something that I thought was an incredible mistake on his end.

“Starbucks… people spend half an hour charging, at least. Imagine if they could spend half an hour drinking your overpriced coffee. Put a charging station in every Starbucks… let me put it this way, the same people who go to Starbucks are the same people who buy EVs,” said Rory. You can watch his mulut masin words in the video below.

So, either Rory predicted the future, or Starbucks and ChargEV paid attention to his plea. But whoever’s idea it was, sticking an EV charging station at Starbucks Drive-Thrus is a great step to help campaign for more EVs in the country. So, when Rory told me that giving his idea out for free to Starbucks was “for the greater good” and not a missed opportunity, I almost believed him. Almost.
