Yesterday, we reported that Malaysian Grab riders have shared on social media that they’re planning for a protest on Friday, 5 August 2022. After reaching out to Grab, a representative sent us a statement in response to the protest and whether Grab has actually lowered the riders’ earnings.
The call for protest

Grab riders groups on Facebook have shared posters with the words “Sembelih Rider”—which roughly translates to “killing the riders”. According to another post on Facebook, the protest has to do with an apparent fare change that went viral amongst Grab riders. Reportedly, an apparent screenshot showed a RM3 fare for June 2022 when the riders’ fare has always been RM5.
The screenshot that went viral is reportedly a doctored screenshot. However, many riders have shared their frustrations on the Facebook group pages—and planned to switch off the rider app this Friday as a protest.
“We struggle for our rider friends for justice together. What’s wrong with just stopping work for one day to give an impact on Grab to make changes to protect the riders?” wrote a member on Facebook.
Grab’s statement
After reaching out to Grab yesterday, a representative sent us a statement today regarding the riders’ protest. They also deny that they have lowered fares for the riders, as well.
“You are right to assume that we have not changed our fares, and it was a misunderstanding which we have already addressed it with them, now almost 2 weeks ago. And from what I understand, if you search through the various rider groups you will see many comments suggesting riders (are) against it anyway, so we rather not fan an unnecessary flame.”

The statement that Grab sent to the riders said that the “viral screenshot” saying the riders’ fare changed from RM5 to RM3 is actually a “technical error” in June 2022. However, there aren’t any new posts that suggest that the riders would cancel the protest. We’re not sure if GrabFood deliveries would forcefully halt this coming Friday, or if it will be a lot harder to order deliveries then.
