The National Planetarium is holding a smartphone astrophotography contest from now until 27 May 2022

Malaysia’s National Planetarium has announced that they are holding a “smartphone astrophotography” contest from now until 27 May 2022. The winner will receive a tabletop telescope, and the contest is open to Malaysians who are 15 years old and above.

Astrophotography is basically night-sky photography, and usually, these types of photos will need you to at least have a camera with a good lens—as well as a lot of patience. However, nowadays, there are plenty of smartphones that can do the job just as well.

To get the best night-sky photos, it wouldn’t hurt to have high-resolution cameras with excellent low-light capabilities—like the iPhone 13 Pro Max, and the Samsung Galaxy 22 Ultra. But you can also get great photos with older smartphones that also have low-light capabilities.

The contest is open to all Malaysian citizens ages 15 and above. They will need to send both the final image, along with the RAW file, to aziz@planet.gov.my. There are the other added information you’ll need to send in the entry:

  • Your name
  • IC number
  • Your smartphone’s brand and model
  • The image’s tech details like the exposure time and ISO
  • The theme/name of the object

The winner will have their image be shown on the Planetarium’s official Facebook page. They will also receive a “tabletop telescope”—but they didn’t specify what kind of tabletop telescope it would be.

“The image that receives a lot of Likes will have a lot of potential to be a winning contender for this contest,” wrote the Planetarium on Facebook.

Make sure to send your entries by 12am, 27 May 2022.
