PSA: Beware of ePemula eWallet cashout offers from strangers

The Ministry of Finance has kicked off the RM150 ePemula eWallet programme yesterday with four platforms namely BigPay, Grab, Shopee and Touch ‘n Go eWallet. The programme is aimed at encouraging cashless transactions at physical merchants among the youths. That also means you can’t cash out or transfer the funds to another account. However, it appears that some individuals are allegedly offering a cash-out option through a merchant QR code.

We’ve spotted several offers by individuals on social media that claim to offer cash out for ePemula recipients. Those who are interested will be given a QR code to scan via private message and the individual will then transfer the amount to the user’s bank account. While this is a way to get around the limitation of the ePemula programme, such transactions are highly not advisable.

Firstly, you’re giving away your credit to a total stranger and there’s a risk that you won’t get your money back. On top of that, cashing out is against the terms and conditions of the ePemula programme as it is clearly stated that the RM150 eWallet credit or voucher is strictly non-transferrable and non-refundable. If you’re caught violating the terms and conditions, the eWallet providers may reserve the right to restrict or even suspended your eWallet account in suspicion of illegal activities.

Instead of taking the risk, why not spend it on a physical merchant and support local businesses? In case you didn’t know, BigPay, Grab, Shopee and Touch ‘n Go eWallet supports DuitNow QR, the national QR code standard. If you see the pink DuitNow QR code, that means the same QR code can accept payments from participating eWallets and online banking apps.

Take note that your RM150 credit must be utilised by 10th June 2022. If you haven’t redeemed your RM150 ePemula credit, you can check out the extra offers provided by each platform. Do note that Grab is offering the RM150 as vouchers instead of credit, which changes the way you can utilise the benefit.
