I get it—using GIFs on social media platforms, including on Twitter, isn’t cool anymore according to Gen-Z-ers. But what if you can make your own, without needing to download a separate GIF maker or converter. In fact… what if you can make a GIF right on Twitter at a tap of a button? Well, whether or not it’s cool, you are now able to do so. But only if you’re using iOS at the moment.
Twitter Support tweeted that you’re now able to make your own GIFs from your in-app camera on iOS. Previously, you can only ever really choose GIFs from Twitter’s GIF library—and it’s a bit of a hassle if you want to make your own.
It’s been a while since I’ve made GIFs from my Tumblr days (don’t judge me), but they can be a hassle to make. You can make easy GIFs with online converters, but they can usually come with weird watermarks or make you pay for their services. You could even use Photoshop, but that takes a lot of effort—and Photoshop money.
To make your own GIF through Twitter, make sure that you’re on Twitter’s latest update. Then, press the + button, like how you would make a regular Twitter post. Press the camera icon, and the app will reveal not only a Capture and Live option—but also a GIF option.
Pressing GIF will take a short few frames and a GIF will automatically be made. You can also have the option to retake the GIF or use it for your tweet. However, you don’t need to post the GIF if you want to save it—pressing Use GIF will have it automatically added to your phone’s gallery.
The feature isn’t yet available for Android users. But Twitter has said that the new option will be “coming soon to the Android app”, even though it has not yet given a specific date.
Using Twitter has an easy way to make GIFs—even if you don’t end up posting it—might make it easier for people to make moving Whatsapp stickers if you’re into that kind of stuff. It certainly is a thing for us in our office Whatsapp group, so I can’t wait for more stickers based on my coworkers.
