If you regularly face sky-high electricity bills every month, TNB has identified water purifiers with heating and cooling technology as one of the main causes of high electricity bills. According to Selangor TNB retail chief, Ismail Lathifi Teh, electrical appliances with cooling systems—such as refrigerators and air conditioners—use a lot of energy to maintain a steady temperature.
This is particularly relevant during hot weather, and Malaysia’s geographical location obviously means that temperatures are generally very high all year round. As such, machines that use compressors require more electricity to maintain temperatures.
“So if we keep opening the refrigerator door or take chilled water from the water purifier in our homes, more electrical energy consumption is required to maintain the cold temperature.”
Meanwhile, TNB also advises those of you who regularly use air conditioners to use the timer function (available on most air conditioners), and set the temperature of your unit to between 24–26 degrees Celsius. You’re also advised to set the timer to turn off the air conditioner at around 2am—then, switch to the fan for the rest of the night. Plus, of course, remember to service your air conditioner regularly to ensure that the unit runs efficiently, which can also affect your electricity bill.
“I have received complaints from consumers that they do not use air conditioners but their electricity bill has increased substantially. They forget that other electrical appliances also consume electricity.”
I’ll also add on that the light bulbs you use can be a major factor in your monthly electricity bill. There are many choices in energy-efficient lighting, although these are often more expensive to purchase than conventional incandescent bulbs—which waste a lot of energy. Whether you’re going for halogen bulbs, or LED bulbs, it might be worth the investment with a view to lowering your monthly electricity bills.
And finally, be sure to check if your water purifiers come with an eco-mode, or something of that sort. Certain models, when set in eco mode, will reduce the frequency of the motor and heater operation when in darker environments—which would be ideal for those of you who have water purifiers in your offices.
