Apple’s base MacBook Pro 14 upgraded with new M5 chip, priced from RM6,999

The MacBook Pro 14 has just gotten a refresh with Apple’s brand new M5 chip. The new Apple Silicon replaces the old M4 but it is only for the base MacBook Pro 14 model.

Besides the performance upgrades, users can now opt for larger SSD up to 4TB, which is doubled compared to the previous MacBook Pro 14 M4.

The starting price for the MacBook Pro 14 remains unchanged from RM6,999 but it is still listed as coming soon for Malaysia.

MacBook Pro 14 M5 pricing in Malaysia

Here’s the MacBook Pro 14″ M5 pricing in Malaysia:

  • 16GB Memory + 512GB SSD: RM6,999
  • 16GB Memory + 1TB SSD: RM7,849
  • 24GB Memory + 1TB SSD: RM8,699

You can customise your MacBook Pro 14 M5 with up to 32GB RAM and up to 4TB of storage. There’s also the option to switch to a nano-texture display for an additional RM640. If you want faster charging, you can upgrade from 70W to 96W USB-C Power adapter for an additional RM80.

With options ticked, the MacBook Pro 14 M5 with nano-texture display, 32GB unified memory, 4TB SSD and 96W USB-C Power adapter will cost you RM14,519 in Malaysia.

At the moment, Apple has only introduced the base M5 chip. If you want more performance, the higher M4 Pro and M4 Max are still available for both MacBook Pro 14 and 16.

What’s new with MacBook Pro 14 M5?

The new M5 chip built on a 3rd generation 3nm technology claims to offer world’s fastest performance core. With its 10-core CPU consisting of six efficiency and four performance cores, it offers up to 20% faster multithreaded performance over the M4. The improved 16-core Neural Engine boasts nearly 30% increase in unified memory bandwidth from 120GB/s to 153GB/s.

They have also added with Neural Accelerator in the GPU to boost AI workloads. It also boasts 2x faster SSD performance and users can now configure with up to 4TB of SSD storage.

Similar as before, the MacBook Pro 14 still boasts up to 24 hours of battery life.

The rest of the MacBook Pro 14 remains unchanged as it still features a 14.2″ Liquid Retina XDR display with 120Hz refresh rate and up to 1,600 nits of peak brightness. There’s no difference in connectivity as it still supports WiFi 6E with Bluetooth 5.3.

The 14″ MacBook pro still gets three Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C ports), a HDMI port, a 3.5mm audio jack and a SDXC card slot. There’s also a 12MP Centre Stage camera, 6-speaker sound system with force-cancelling woofers and a studio-quality three-mic array.

The battery remains unchanged with a 72.4Wh battery. If you’re using the 96W USB-C power adapter or higher, it can support fast charging, allowing you to charge from 0-50% in about 30 minutes.

Overall, the MacBook Pro 14 weighs 1.55kg and it is 1.55cm thick.
